This unit, “Reimagination!”, will introduce and expand on students’ knowledge of what it means to repurpose and reimagine old or used materials to create new artwork. The lessons overall will address repurposing materials to create sketchbooks, mosaics, and stop-motion videos. Students will also experiment with ceramics to create a clay sculpture for the base of their mosaic, a found item sculpture.
Students will:
learn how to reuse materials to create new projects.
learn how to bind and create their own sketchbook.
create abstract/organic clay forms to mosaic with found item tiles/plates.
be taught the importance of reimagining old material and creating new work from old.
Teachers will:
stress the importance of recycling and taking care of the community.
encourage students to explore reimagining objects and ideas.
encourage students to explore new concepts, reusing, and trying new things.
Week 1: Tape Art & Junk Journals
Students engaged in a collaborative Tape Art challenge: “Build a corner store and fill it with products that reflect your community traditions and needs.” Students also used paper bags to create junk journals that they could use as a sketchbook for the remainder of the program. PRESENTATION LINK
Weeks 2+3: Ceramics & Mosaics
Students observed a live demonstration on how to make a pinch pot and how to slip and score to add attachments to their clay structures without them falling off in the kiln. Students were then given time to construct clay monsters with the assistance of the instructors. The following week, students observed a live demonstration on how to adhere tesserae to their clay sculptures. Then, students were given time to create a mosaic on their previously created pinch pot monsters with the assistance of the instructors. Students were given glass tiles, buttons, beads, small wooden items, etc. PRESENTATION LINK + Pinch Pot Monster Handout
Week 4: University Galleries Visit + Texture Stamping
Students walked from the Center for Visual Arts to University Galleries to engage in a gallery tour of Jen Bervin’s exhibition SHIFT ROATATE REFLECT and then collected textures to stamp into their junk journals during our transitions across campus.
Week 5 & 6: Stop Motion
Students were asked to create characters and scenes out of found objects or what was available to them. They were then prompted to think about how their characters were to move, interact with the world around them, and act/behave.
